Floral Design Day was created in honor of a gentleman by the name of Carl Rittner.  Mr. Rittner ran a school for floral design in Boston appropriately named “The Rittners School of Floral Design”.  People interested in the floral design work space flocked to his teachings both domestically and internationally.

Mr. Huisman also has a passion for baseball. His love of baseball started as an 8 year old kid. He dreamed of one day playing in the majors. In 1995, that dream became a reality. He took the field for the first time as a major league pitcher for the Kansas City Royals baseball team. Love Stories for Valentines

Valentine’s Day is  in two weeks. This fantastic day is for romance and other sweet stories of affection. Whether it is two young people in love,  school kids exchanging cards, sending flowers to lonely senior person or just doing something thoughtful for a friend, it is a time for caring. Love poems abound during this time. People spend lots of time in the card section trying to find that perfect card with just the right message or perhaps making up their own personalized poetic message.

History provides us with numerous love stories. Often the stories involve a couple who over came hardship and weathered the storm.  Once such story is that of Robert and Elizabeth Browning. Perhaps you remember Elizabeth’s famous poem to Robert:

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

Elizabeth Barrett Browning – 1806-1861

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

On January 10, 1845, The great poet, Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth Barrett. She was an internationally renowned  poet and he was a 32 year old poet who was not yet famous. Robert was enamored with her poetry and volume of poems.  In his message to Elizabeth he said “I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett—I do, as I say, love these verses with all my heart”.  This started a 20 month long correspondence of over 600 letters and is one of the greatest literary correspondences.

 

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was the daughter of Mary Moulton Barrett and Edward Barrett. Her father as an extremely wealthy landowner who owned sugar plantations in Jamaica. When Elizabeth was just 21, her mother passed away. She was the oldest of the family’s 12 children and often thought to be her father’s favorite child. Edward Barrett was a strict man and forbid his children to get married.  In 1846, against Edward’s wishes, Robert and Elizabeth secretly wed.

Some of Elizabeth’s illness was thought by her physician to be worsened by the cold winters in London. He recommended she travel to Pisa Italy. It was there that Robert and she would spend the next 15 years of their lives. They secretly married and had a son. Living happily until her death in 1861, they continued to write poetry. One of the most famous poetic lines ever written came from Barrett Browning’s Sonnets From the Portuguese (1850).

The well known line is , “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”. Elizabeth continued her works completing a second edition of Poems, as well as Casa Guidi Windows (1851), Poems before Congress (1860), and her well known verse-novel, Aurora Leigh (1857).  She was an activist for Italian nationalism, the abolition of American slavery, and for the advancement of women.  Robert published Men and Women, which was a dedication to his wife Elizabeth. She died in his arms on June 29, 1861.

Proteas –  Wow these are over 300 million years old. So maybe not that fresh. Just kidding of course. These flowers signify diversity, courage, change and hope. Sometimes long distance relationships have many of these components so proteas are a good way to let someone know your are thinking about them.

Freesias – Give someone who is pregnant a sweet smelling pink freesias and she will know the message is one of maternal love. These flowers are native to South Africa and therefore in season year round. The red freesias symbolizes passion.

Gerbera Daisies –  This variety of flower is actually the  fifth most popular flower in the world according to floral professionals. They are another flower that has year round blooms of various meaningful colors.  If you want to project to your sweetheart the true love you feel then give them red daisies. However, if your mission is to show someone you have a crush on them and to let them know how you really feel, give them a bouquet of pink daisies which symbolizes adoration.  Then for the less romantic friendship messages you can send yellow, white or orange daisies.

Carnations – If your desire is to convey love and admiration, the red carnation is great flower choice and they are in season year round.  Try to avoid giving a sweet heart or a friend a yellow or striped carnation as they convey rejection.

Peonies – These flowers are a very romantic choice and are considered to be a good omen for a happy marriage.  They are a national symbol in China and represent wealth, honor, and good fortune. If you are in trouble with your sweetheart, you may send white peonies as a representation of shame and apology.  Send pink peonies to be the most romantic.

Anemones – An unusual characteristic of this flower is that it closes at night and does not reopen until morning. It is sometimes dubbed with the meaning of anticipation for this reason. The blue and purple varieties are thought to protect against evil.

Lavender – The marvelous scent of lavender is world famous. Many perfumes and oils are scented with it.  A lovely bouquet of lavender will symbolize beauty and devotion to your sweet Valentine.

Tulips – The red tulip symbolizes true love therefore an ideal flower for Valentine’s Day.  Pink tulips signify happiness and if you have had an argument send white and hope for forgiveness.

Houseplants have been the focus of numerous studies over the years. Many of these studies have  reported that houseplants provide many health benefits in the home. One study in 2009 conducted by the University of Technology in Sydney Australia found that it was highly probable houseplants absorbed toxins in the air. The science behind how the plants are able to do this is related to their biological processes.

Ecuadorian Roses – These flowers are favorites worldwide. They are farm grown and meticulously handpicked. Often people travel to the country of Ecuador to see these magnificent roses. This country is the third largest supplier of flowers in the world and most of those are roses.
