March 20th is the first day of Spring. Daylight Savings time kicks in so we have more daylight after work and the weather is warming.  For many people Spring is a favorite time of year. Then for some of us it is a stepping stone for the summer season.

Hemispheres experience different seasons. In the United States and United Kingdom located in the Northern Hemisphere, Spring time is defined as March, April and May. However, in the Southern Hemisphere, countries like Australia and New Zealand are experiencing autumn. In that Hemisphere Spring time is defined as September, October and November.

Scientifically speaking, the warmer weather of Spring is caused by the actual tilting of the earth’s axis toward the Sun. Love Stories for Valentines

Valentine’s Day is  in two weeks. This fantastic day is for romance and other sweet stories of affection. Whether it is two young people in love,  school kids exchanging cards, sending flowers to lonely senior person or just doing something thoughtful for a friend, it is a time for caring. Love poems abound during this time. People spend lots of time in the card section trying to find that perfect card with just the right message or perhaps making up their own personalized poetic message.

History provides us with numerous love stories. Often the stories involve a couple who over came hardship and weathered the storm.  Once such story is that of Robert and Elizabeth Browning. Perhaps you remember Elizabeth’s famous poem to Robert:

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

Elizabeth Barrett Browning – 1806-1861

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose

On January 10, 1845, The great poet, Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth Barrett. She was an internationally renowned  poet and he was a 32 year old poet who was not yet famous. Robert was enamored with her poetry and volume of poems.  In his message to Elizabeth he said “I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett—I do, as I say, love these verses with all my heart”.  This started a 20 month long correspondence of over 600 letters and is one of the greatest literary correspondences.

 

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was the daughter of Mary Moulton Barrett and Edward Barrett. Her father as an extremely wealthy landowner who owned sugar plantations in Jamaica. When Elizabeth was just 21, her mother passed away. She was the oldest of the family’s 12 children and often thought to be her father’s favorite child. Edward Barrett was a strict man and forbid his children to get married.  In 1846, against Edward’s wishes, Robert and Elizabeth secretly wed.

Some of Elizabeth’s illness was thought by her physician to be worsened by the cold winters in London. He recommended she travel to Pisa Italy. It was there that Robert and she would spend the next 15 years of their lives. They secretly married and had a son. Living happily until her death in 1861, they continued to write poetry. One of the most famous poetic lines ever written came from Barrett Browning’s Sonnets From the Portuguese (1850).

The well known line is , “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”. Elizabeth continued her works completing a second edition of Poems, as well as Casa Guidi Windows (1851), Poems before Congress (1860), and her well known verse-novel, Aurora Leigh (1857).  She was an activist for Italian nationalism, the abolition of American slavery, and for the advancement of women.  Robert published Men and Women, which was a dedication to his wife Elizabeth. She died in his arms on June 29, 1861.

Valentine’s Day 2021

This Valentine’s Day will be the first time that the holiday has been celebrated during a known pandemic. We have learned how to cope with the virus and the vast majority practice the published safe guards. Valentine’s Day is a special holiday that makes hearts flutter and people smile so we have to find time and alternative ways to not let the sweet moments in life pass us by.

Just a little history surrounding this romantic day. According to legend, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th because in 269 AD on this day,  Saint Valentine died.  Saint Valentine was said to have gone against the laws of the Roman courts by performing marriages for soldiers and helping persecuted Christians. He was then imprisoned and sentenced to execution. Before his sentence was carried out he cured the blindness of a woman named Julia. She was the daughter of his jailer. He also wrote her a letter before his sentence was carried out and signed it “Your Valentine”.

According to the English historian,  John Fox,  Saint Valentine was buried in the Church of Praxedes in Rome. It is thought, according to legend, that Julia herself planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave.  That tree remains a symbol of their devotion, love and friendship.

It is thought that Saint Valentine wore a purple amethyst ring. This ring was commonly worn by Christian Bishops. It had the image of Cupid carved on it which as we know is a symbol today of love. In England by the 18th-century, it was common for people in love to gift flowers, candy and cards to each other. All of these were expressions of love and devotion. There is not a better time to embrace “Home is where the heart is” than this year’s Valentine’s Day. No need to leave the comfort of your own home unless you want to. With restaurants, bars and other venues scaled back for attendance, there are plenty of ways you can have a romantic and memorable evening by staying home.

  • Cook – Does your sweetheart have a favorite meal? You can research recipes and give it a try. Whether your creation is delectable or not, the thought you put into trying to create a wonderful meal will no doubt score romantic points.
  • Create a Relaxing Environment – Light candles and draw a bubble bath for your special someone. You can pamper one another and let the pressures of everyday life drift away.
  • Dance – Bring back that fun feeling when you and your sweetheart twirled around the dance floor. You can move some furniture and put on your favorite tunes. There are also plenty of online classes if you want to learn a new dance.
  • Watch Movies – Whether you both choose to watch romantic, scary or action flicks, spending time snuggled up will make for a wonderful Valentine’s Day. If movies do not work for you then perhaps browsing through old photo albums that bring back sweet memories will.
  • Picnic – Check the weather forecast as after all it is winter. If if it looks warm and nice, you may plan an outdoor picnic in your backyard. Work hard to get the setting just right and then take your sweetheart by the hand and lead them to your backyard picnic paradise.

  • Highest Risk: On-site dining with indoor seating. Seating capacity not reduced and tables not spaced at least 6 feet apart.
