Valentine’s Day is  in two weeks. This fantastic day is for romance and other sweet stories of affection. Whether it is two young people in love,  school kids exchanging cards, sending flowers to lonely senior person or just doing something thoughtful for a friend, it is a time for caring. Love poems abound during this time. People spend lots of time in the card section trying to find that perfect card with just the right message or perhaps making up their own personalized poetic message.

History provides us with numerous love stories. Often the stories involve a couple who over came hardship and weathered the storm.  Once such story is that of Robert and Elizabeth Browning. Perhaps you remember Elizabeth’s famous poem to Robert:

Robert was enamored with her poetry and volume of poems.  In his message to Elizabeth he said “I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett—I do, as I say, love these verses with all my heart”.  This started a 20 month long correspondence of over 600 letters and is one of the greatest literary correspondences.

 

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was the daughter of Mary Moulton Barrett and Edward Barrett. Her father as an extremely wealthy landowner who owned sugar plantations in Jamaica. When Elizabeth was just 21, her mother passed away. She was the oldest of the family’s 12 children and often thought to be her father’s favorite child. Edward Barrett was a strict man and forbid his children to get married.  In 1846, against Edward’s wishes, Robert and Elizabeth secretly wed.

Some of Elizabeth’s illness was thought by her physician to be worsened by the cold winters in London. He recommended she travel to Pisa Italy. It was there that Robert and she would spend the next 15 years of their lives. They secretly married and had a son. Living happily until her death in 1861, they continued to write poetry. One of the most famous poetic lines ever written came from Barrett Browning’s Sonnets From the Portuguese (1850).

The well known line is , “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”. Elizabeth continued her works completing a second edition of Poems, as well as Casa Guidi Windows (1851), Poems before Congress (1860), and her well known verse-novel, Aurora Leigh (1857).  She was an activist for Italian nationalism, the abolition of American slavery, and for the advancement of women.  Robert published Men and Women, which was a dedication to his wife Elizabeth. She died in his arms on June 29, 1861.

Transition to next generation begins at Holland and Grand Haven retail shops.

Grand Rapids, MI  Jan 25, 2021 – Huisman Flowers and Eastern Floral jointly announced today the transition of ownership of Eastern Floral’s retail business operations in Holland, Michigan and Grand Haven, Michigan. Nicole and Rick Huisman, daughter and son-in-law of Bing and Jean Goei, have finalized terms under which they will assume ownership of the two floral shops as part of a long-planned business transition.

“This is a wonderful day for Jean and me,” said Bing Goei, CEO of Eastern Floral. “As owners of a family business, we’ve always hoped to be able to pass on the business to our children. We are so proud that Rick and Nikki are ready to take over the two lakeshore operations and make our dream come true.”

Eastern Floral was established in Grand Rapids in 1950. The flagship operation is located at 2836 Broadmoor Avenue SE. The Holland business, currently located at 11595 East Lakewood Boulevard, was established in the early 1990’s while the Grand Haven store currently located at 556 North Beacon Boulevard began in the early 2000’s. Huisman Flowers will operate as a division of Eastern Floral Lakeshore.

“Nikki and I are thrilled to take on this new opportunity and carry on the tremendous legacy established by Bing and Jean,” said Rick Huisman, co-owner of Huisman Flowers. “Our customers have always received the highest level of products and services from our Holland and Grand Haven operations and those standards will continue to live on under our ownership.”

The Holland and Grand Haven locations employ more than 25 full-time and part-time staff.

No doubt Red Roses are a favorite at Valentine’s Day but there are many other flowers that can be given and each with a special meaning and symbolism attached to it. Below are some other options if you are feeling like being different this Valentine’s Day.

Orchids –  Always a lovely flowering plant to give some one and relatively easy to care for. As you are selecting your Orchid, some things to remember are that different colors symbolize different things.  Yellow orchids for example symbolize friendship which is not the complete message you want to convey if your are romantically involved with someone. Valentine’s Day 2021

This Valentine’s Day will be the first time that the holiday has been celebrated during a known pandemic. We have learned how to cope with the virus and the vast majority practice the published safe guards. Valentine’s Day is a special holiday that makes hearts flutter and people smile so we have to find time and alternative ways to not let the sweet moments in life pass us by.

Just a little history surrounding this romantic day. According to legend, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th because in 269 AD on this day,  Saint Valentine died.  Saint Valentine was said to have gone against the laws of the Roman courts by performing marriages for soldiers and helping persecuted Christians. He was then imprisoned and sentenced to execution. Before his sentence was carried out he cured the blindness of a woman named Julia. She was the daughter of his jailer. He also wrote her a letter before his sentence was carried out and signed it “Your Valentine”.

According to the English historian,  John Fox,  Saint Valentine was buried in the Church of Praxedes in Rome. It is thought, according to legend, that Julia herself planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave.  That tree remains a symbol of their devotion, love and friendship.

It is thought that Saint Valentine wore a purple amethyst ring. This ring was commonly worn by Christian Bishops. It had the image of Cupid carved on it which as we know is a symbol today of love. In those times it was associated with love that was legal in the Roman Empire.  Due to the association of the ring and Saint Valentine, the amethyst is the birthstone of February and is thought to attract love.

Under the influence of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century,  Valentine’s Day became associated with romantic love. In England by the 18th-century, it was common for people in love to gift flowers, candy and cards to each other. All of these were expressions of love and devotion. As we know, the most common symbols of love on Valentine’s Day include heart shapes, doves or the figure of the flying Cupid. Handwritten notes expressing one’s love and devotion have become popular as well as greeting cards.

There is not a better time to embrace “Home is where the heart is” than this year’s Valentine’s Day. No need to leave the comfort of your own home unless you want to. With restaurants, bars and other venues scaled back for attendance, there are plenty of ways you can have a romantic and memorable evening by staying home.

  • Cook – Does your sweetheart have a favorite meal? You can research recipes and give it a try. Whether your creation is delectable or not, the thought you put into trying to create a wonderful meal will no doubt score romantic points.
  • Create a Relaxing Environment – Light candles and draw a bubble bath for your special someone. You can pamper one another and let the pressures of everyday life drift away.

One study in 2009 conducted by the University of Technology in Sydney Australia found that it was highly probable houseplants absorbed toxins in the air.   • Superior Growing Conditions – These roses have the unfair advantage of having the perfect mix of cooler moist air in an altitude of 3000 ft. The altitude is key as it means they are closer to the Sun. This results in the stems growing much straighter and longer that roses grown in article light.
  • Vivid Color – Due to the warm days and cool nights in this region, the petals of the Ecuadorian Rose are extremely beautiful. Other roses grown in parts of the world where artificial lighting and pesticides are used, just do not compare.

Full Bloom Hydrangea – Hydrangeas’ have star-shaped flowers and can be found in many different colors.  Because the flowers are in such a large collection of blooms, they are symbolic of a united family, friendship, gratitude and overall abundance of love. They are a hearty flower so are able to maintain their beauty longer than other varieties of fresh cut flowers.

Exotic Orchids – “The orchids grow in the woods and they let out their fragrance even if there is no one around to appreciate it. Likewise, men of noble character will not let poverty deter their will to be guided by high principles and morals.” –Confucius. Orchids usually are associated with the symbolism of fertility.  However, different colors have varying meanings

  • White orchids symbolize innocence and purity, as well as elegance and reverence.
  • Pink orchids symbolize femininity, grace, and joy.
  • Yellow orchids symbolize friendship and new beginnings.
  • Purple orchids symbolize royalty and admiration, and are traditionally given as a sign of respect.
  • Orange orchids symbolize pride, enthusiasm, and boldness.

For example, we are able to reduce the time between when the flowers are cut at the farm and when they arrive in our shop to be used in floral designs.
