National Rose Month is dedicated to Roses. June is a great month for Roses as they are typically in full bloom. In the United States, several states use varieties of both wild and domesticated roses as their state flower. In New York the official flower is any rose of any color. North Dakota and Iowa refer to the Prairie Rose as their state flower. The Cherokee Rose is Georgia’s state flower and finally the “Oklahoma Rose” is the state flower of Oklahoma.

There are some very interesting facts about the Rose. Below are a few of those:

There are only three flowers mentioned in the Bible and the Rose is one of those three. Lilies and camphire are the others.
The largest private Rose collection is in Tuscany. The Carla Fineshi Rose Garden has more than 6,500 different varieties.
Roses have a long life expectancy. There are even fossils of the Rose dating back to 35 million years.
In ancient times, the Romans used Roses for decorations and because of their wonderful fragrance they used them as necklaces.
Roses are one of the more expensive flowers and the most expensive is the Juliet. It took 15 years to breed this variety.
The tallest Rose bush ever recorded is 18 feet 8 inches. It is located in La Puente California and is a variety called Bewitched hybrid tea rose.
Though there is a Rose referred to as the Black Rose, this is actually a Rose that has such a dark red color it appears to black.

Easter falls on different dates from year to year and in 2021 it falls on April 4th. The reason for this change is that Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Easter, as with other holidays ushers in a changing of the seasons. Spring is symbolic to the renewing of life as the plants and trees that have been dormant for the winter begin to blossom. Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere look forward to warmer weather and an increase in more daylight. This symbolism of the coming back to life is a correlation to the resurrection of Jesus.

In the Jewish faith, this time is referred to as Passover. The Hebrew Bible commemorates Passover as a festival which celebrates the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. This is referenced in the Book of Exodus. During the time of Jesus, Jewish pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem in hope that God would liberate them from the Romans. On one Passover, Jesus traveled to Jerusalem and the resulting disturbance in the Temple ultimately led to his crucifixion.
