The city was founded in 1849 by two men: William Barter and John Westcott. The area was first settled by Native Americans who called it “Wyoming” because of the abundance of wolves in the area. In 1834, the area was purchased from a man named Wyman Austin by one David Edwards who renamed it “Grand Haven.” He built a saw mill and began cutting timber that was used to build ships at nearby docks. In 1849 William Barter and John Westcott came to Grand Haven looking for land on which they could build a town where they could live and work with their families.
